I have more students from around the country tell me that they are going out of state, to Oklahoma State University, to study agriculture than to any other university.  On today's show I finally get to find out why this is!  OSU has something going on, and it is working.  The lineup of guests we have today do a great job of demonstrating what there is to love in Stillwater, and today will get to profile the Ferguson College Of Agriculture.

When it comes to ROI or return on investment, Tennessee Tech probably has the best of any university that I have interviewed for this episode.  They are certainly in the top 5, and that includes for non-resident students.  On today's episode we are profiling this university that sits about halfway between Nashville and Knoxville in upper Tennessee and offers a wide array of agricultural options for the future Ag professional.

Northwest Missouri State University is located in the middle of an agribusiness triangle made up of Omaha, Kansas City and Des Moines.  60% of the agriculture students here grew up on farms, 30% are from rural communities but not farms and 10% come from more urban areas with an interest in agriculture.  To facilitate this pragmatic education they offer a 448 acre learning farm with an agricultural learning center located there and more value added and direct to market facilities developing as we speak.

Hawkeye Community College is located right in the heart of production agriculture as well as being in the same city as John Deere's Manufacturing Plant.  Agribusiness is obviously relevant every direction you look at this 2 Year college.  However, in addition to large scale, agribusiness Hawkeye teaches entrepreneurship with real world examples of smaller, direct to consumer ag businesses so that an ag student can tailor their education to fit their vision.

Have you ever heard of "Laradise"?  Well, I had not either.  That is how the folks living and going to college in Laramie, Wyoming describe where they live.  This is the location of the only university in the state of Wyoming, The University Of Wyoming.  Being the only university in a geographically large state with a very low population opens up an immensely diverse set of opportunities for students.  Agriculture, wildlife and topography is very diverse throughout the state from Yellowstone National Park on the western edge to Mid-West style farming on the east, and much in between.

Applying for, receiving and working in an Internship was one of the best things I did while I was in college.  And, even though it sounds like everyone does this when you listen to my Ag College Episodes, that is not true.  Many college students allow this opportunity to pass them right by.

On today's episode I really want to encourage students to get involved in internships during the time they are in post-secondary education, whether that be trade school, community college or a four year university.  There are so many reasons that this will benefit you, including:

  • Exposure to industry
  • Determining what career you want
  • Determining what career you do not want
  • Creating a network of industry people
  • Building a resume
  • Learning things and building skills for the future and opportunities that have not even been invented yet

I began my college career at a community college and got off to a great start academically.  I have often stated, with all seriousness, that had I not had that beginning, I probably would not have graduated with a bachelor's degree.  So, I believe that a community college is an absolutely fantastic place to begin a college pursuit, and that is why I wanted to profile as many as possible on this episode.

In today's episode I am proving Aims Community College from Fort Lupton, Colorado.  We are going to be talking about the re-emergence of their agricultural program, the emergence of new opportunities and why a 38 year old man, who is redefining his life chose Aims for his new beginning.

Mid-State Technical College serves as a conduit between employers in their region of Wisconsin looking for talented and qualified recruits, and up and coming employees who need certifications and more to be qualified to work for those employers.  This pragmatic approach is very beneficial to agriculture students because that is how we in agriculture tend to operate.  And, because Mid-State Tech. has four locations, they can cater to all the different types of agriculture that are represented in each location.

The College Of The Ozarks is unlike any other college I have profiled to date.  Not only do you work 15 hours per week for your tuition, but you are not allowed to pay for your tuition.  Even better, the university does not allow its students to take out student loans.  If you attend the College Of The Ozarks, your are literally guaranteed to graduate with $0 in student loan debt.

I discovered the College Of The Ozarks through an interview I did with Weston Whiteside (episode #1845 - 9/25/23), who is a 2023 American Star Finalist in the category of agribusiness.  He is a third year student there and told me that he works in exchange for tuition when I interviewed him.  On today's episode I speak with him and his agriculture professor, Tamara Holder, to get all of your questions answered.

Dustin Toberman is the owner of Omni Ag Consulting and a veteran of the commercial ag world and a former VP for Bungee running their northern division.  After 20 years in this aspect of agriculture, Dustin has seen a lot of talented ag students come and go in internships and has done a lot of hiring.  He has also seen what is impressive on a resume and in an interview, and he has seen the unrealistic expectations of newly graduated students.

At the end of Dustin's corporate career, his company was once again merging, and he decided that he did not want to go through another merger.  So, he assessed what he was passionate about and realized that helping pair the right talent with the right opportunity was something that had always got him excited.  This led to the development of Omni Ag Consulting, and within two years he is amazed by the impact he has already been able to make.

On today's episode we are going talk about his path, and we are also going to discuss how students coming out of college and heading into the agricultural career field can best succeed!

The State of South Dakota, like many other states in the middle of the countries is dealing with the issue of shrinking rural communities and less qualified employees for agricultural companies in those areas.  While I am not happy this is the situation for these communities, it does create fantastic opportunities for students who want to work in agriculture and live rurally.

Mitchell Technical College is based in Mitchell, South Dakota and is part of the solution to this problem for the State of South Dakota.  Among the opportunities for agriculture students in South Dakota is learning the skills that lead into an agricultural career through Mitchell Tech. for free and having a guaranteed career position when your two year program is completed.  This is done through a program called Build Dakota, and there are other programs available as well.  Imagine landing your first career position while you are still in high school, having your college 100% paid for and having a job waiting for you when you finished.

Clayton Deuter, the Vice President of Enrollment Services at Mitchell Technical College, joins me on the show today.  We will discuss how this works, what the benefits to students are and how to get this done.  This is a very exciting opportunity for agricultural students from all across the U.S. to help them find their future.

Lake Area Technical College is a 2 year, public college, located in Watertown, South Dakota.  There is a strong emphasis on real world, practical application of education at Lake Area Tech.  In this interview I encountered a term that was new to me - Supervised Occupational Experience - this is a program, similar to an internship, designed to get students into the field and working which often leads to their first job out of college.  In today's episode Greg Miller, the Agriculture Department Supervisor, joins me to talk about this highly recommended program.

Purdue University is currently ranked as the #3 agricultural college in the U.S. and the #5 in the entire world!  And, did you know that Purdue University has had a freeze on tuition rates for twelve years?  Factoring in inflation, it is cheaper to go to college at Purdue right now than it was 12 years ago.

On today's show I am joined by Andrea Lutz, the Assistant Director for Undergraduate Recruitment as well as Courtney Rodkey, a recent graduate in Ag Economics who is just starting her agricultural career with Corteva.  There is a lot to get to in this interview as there are a lot of opportunities in agriculture at Purdue University.

Abilene Christian University is in Abilene, Texas, and in my opinion it is in the perfect location for Texas adventure and Texas agriculture.  I have been on campus myself and like the area very much.  ACU has had an agriculture program for some time, but with fluctuations in faculty go fluctuations in programs.  So, today they are highly specialized in animal science but have no agronomy.  ACU is a private, Christ based university, and on today's show Dr. Jim Carpenter joins me to talk all about it.

The State University Of New York at Cobleskill offers as wide of a variety of options for learning in agriculture as I have run across, particularly in animal agriculture.  In today's episode we will be profiling degrees from Animal Science to Dog Training and from Dairy Science to Fermentation.  It is fascinating all the different directions you can go at this "magical" agricultural university in Upstate New York.

Angelo State University is located in San Angelo, Texas and sits in the number one goat marketing spot in the number one goat producing state in the entire nation.  Corey Owens, our interview guest today, grew up on a ranch 70 miles west of San Angelo where they raised 1,100 meat goats.  As a goat raiser myself, I could barely get off the topic of Angelo State University being the perfect place for a student who wants to specialize in goat production.  Of course, on Angelo State's 6,000 acre research ranch there is much more to study than just goats.  In today's interview we will learn all about it.

On today's episode Dr. Doug Ullrich, a professor in and chair of the School of Agricultural Sciences at Sam Houston State University is joining me.  Sam Houston State is located in Huntsville, Texas and as Dr. Ullrich describes it houses a very pragmatic, working class type of student seeking four year degrees in agriculture.  A very interesting opportunity popped up during this interview, and that was working with exotic animal species from Africa, Asia and the Middle East as a result of an agreement that Sam Houston State University has with a "high fence game ranch" in the area.  There are certainly unique opportunities at Sam Houston State, and this is another example of a pathway to the agricultural career that you are seeking.
